Graphic Surf Tees Are Back: From NorCal to SoCal Style

There’s something about surf culture that never really leaves you. Where I live in Northern California, we call it “going over the hill”—that stretch along Highway 17 that takes you from Silicon Valley over to the coast. About 45 minutes, give or take. And for me, that drive became routine. Three to four days a week, I was heading over the hill to Santa Cruz, Capitola, and Pleasure Point—sometimes just to sit by the water, sometimes to watch the surfers, and sometimes just to reset. And then there was Mavericks, where the energy shifts completely—raw, powerful, and a little humbling. Long before that, growing up just outside of San Diego, beach culture was already part of how I saw style, color, and self-expression.

From SoCal to the Central Coast: Where Style Took Shape

Over the years, that connection expanded—spending time in Malibu, Santa Barbara, Long Beach, and the beaches of Santa Monica near the boardwalk, making regular trips down to Redondo Beach a couple of times a year to visit a friend, and heading up the Central Coast to places like Pismo Beach in San Luis Obispo County.

Back in Northern California, that same pull to the ocean extended beyond Santa Cruz to places like Ocean Beach in San Francisco—windy, expansive, and completely different in energy, but just as defining.

Each place carries a different energy. Some laid-back, some polished, some quietly powerful—but all distinctly California. Together, they shaped how I think about color, movement, and what clothing should feel like.

So when I design surf-inspired tees, I’m not pulling from a trend—I’m pulling from experience.

Surf tees have always been part of California culture—but right now, they’re evolving. What used to be simple, sun-worn graphics are now bold, expressive, and designed to stand out beyond the beach. Graphic surf tees are becoming everyday staples, worn from coastal towns to city streets, because they carry something deeper than just style—they carry identity.

People aren’t just looking for basics anymore. They want personality. They want color. They want something that says something without trying too hard.

What Makes a Great Surf Tee Today

Graphic SingleTree Lane surf tee design featuring bold original graphics, ocean-inspired color, all-day comfort, and effortless versatility on a beach backdrop

That’s exactly why surf tees have never felt like “just another category” to me.

They’re a reflection of place, energy, and memory—something you carry with you long after you’ve left the coast. And now, they’ve evolved far beyond the beach, becoming a staple in everyday style from coastal towns to city streets.

What started as functional, sun-worn basics has transformed into bold, graphic pieces that carry personality, culture, and identity. And that’s where the modern surf tee really comes alive—at the intersection of experience and expression.

⦿ Bold graphics that feel original, not generic

⦿ Color palettes inspired by ocean, sunsets, and coastal light

⦿ Comfortable, everyday fit that moves with you

⦿ Versatility—beach, travel, errands, or styled up

The modern surf tee isn’t just about surf—it’s about expression. It’s about taking that coastal energy and bringing it into everyday life.

From NorCal to SoCal: A Style Spectrum

California surf culture spectrum illustration showing NorCal, Central Coast, and SoCal styles with contrasting coastal environments

California surf culture isn’t one thing—it’s a spectrum. Northern California brings a slightly rugged, artistic edge. It’s layered, textured, a little unpredictable—just like the coastline itself. The Central Coast offers something different—open, relaxed, and grounded. Places like Pismo Beach carry a slower rhythm, where the space between things becomes part of the experience. Southern California, on the other hand, is sun-soaked and effortless. Clean lines, bright color, relaxed confidence. That contrast is where things get interesting. It’s where structure meets freedom. Where bold meets laid-back. And that balance shows up in the way surf tees are worn today.

From Beachwear to Everyday Style

SingleTree Lane surf tee styled from beachwear to everyday outfits showing transition from board shorts to casual street style

Surf tees are no longer just for the beach. They’ve become one of the easiest ways to bring personality into everyday outfits.

Paired with board shorts, cutoffs, wide leg pants, joggers, or worn with jeans and layered under jackets, they move seamlessly from casual to styled without losing their edge.

And then there’s flip flop culture—very California, very real. Worn with everything from shorts to pants to even dress slacks, it’s less about rules and more about ease. That same mindset carries over into how surf tees are worn: relaxed, adaptable, and completely unforced.

That’s what makes them powerful—they’re effortless, but never boring.

Beyond California: A Global Surf Perspective

Illustration of global surf culture showing surfers riding waves across Japan, Australia, France, Morocco, and the United States with coastal landscapes and national flags

While California shaped my foundation, surf culture doesn’t stop at the coastline. It’s something that carries across borders, shaped by place but connected by energy.

Traveling to places like Biarritz in France and Tangier in Morocco offered a different lens—where surf culture meets history, architecture, and a completely different pace of life. The colors shift. The textures change. The feeling is familiar, but the expression is entirely its own.

That broader perspective adds another layer to how I design. It’s not just about one place—it’s about the shared thread that runs through surf communities everywhere. Different backgrounds, different landscapes, but a common rhythm that connects it all.

Why Surf Style Fits SingleTree Lane

Surf lifestyle illustration titled Why Surf Style Fits SingleTree Lane showing coastal sunset, waves, and couple with bullet points about freedom, individuality, connection, and expressive wearable art

At its core, surf style is about freedom, individuality, and expression—and that aligns perfectly with what SingleTree Lane is all about. It’s about being present. About moving through your day with ease, confidence, and a sense of self that doesn’t need to be over-explained. Colorful. Effortless. Expressive.

Each piece is designed as wearable art, blending bold color, pattern, and storytelling into something that works in real life. Not precious. Not complicated. Just expressive, comfortable, and easy to wear. Because real style isn’t about perfection—it’s about how something feels when you put it on and step out into the world.

But more than anything, it’s about connection. Surf culture has always been rooted in community—the shared experience of being in the same place, feeling the same energy, chasing the same moments. That same idea lives inside SingleTree Lane. Exalting what connects us. What binds us. Our similarities, our shared culture, and the unspoken understanding that we’re all part of something bigger. And just like surf style itself, it’s meant to move with you—wherever you go.

How to Style Graphic Surf Tees

Graphic showing how to style surf tees with four outfits featuring statement pants, mixed prints and layers, colorful styling, and dressed up or casual looks

Styling a graphic surf tee is less about rules and more about instinct. It’s about letting the piece lead, then building around it in a way that feels natural, expressive, and effortless. Whether you’re keeping it casual or pulling it into something more styled, the goal is the same—wear it in a way that feels like you.

⦿ Pair with statement pants for contrast

⦿ Mix prints and layers  intentionally (don’t overthink it)

⦿ Use color (the background of the tee itself) to create energy in your outfit

⦿ Dress it up or down depending on the day
